I have an old TASCAM MM-1 mixing board which I have been plugging a microphone and guitar into. The mixer is old enough that it doesn't have USB ports but it does have MIDI in, MIDI out, and MIDI through ports on the back. I got a MIDI to USB cable in the hopes that I'd be able to plug my guitar into the mixer, then plug the mixer into Garageband, and record the signal I get from the mixer directly into Garageband rather than having to mic an amp. Garageband recognizes that I have a MIDI device connected to the computer but it doesn't seem to be receiving any audio signal. Could someone please walk me through how to connect the mixer to the computer so that I'll get a signal. Thanks.

You can connect real instruments, such as electric keyboards and guitars to your Mac for use in GarageBand. Using real instruments with GarageBand produces not only better sound, but realistic practice, as you finger the actual instrument and not an on-screen keyboard/string set.

You can connect a real MIDI keyboard through a USB cable (on most newer gear) or a MIDI adapter (on older equipment). You can connect other MIDI instruments, including guitars, woodwinds, and drums, and record onto a real instrument track in GarageBand. Click the red Record button when you’re ready to rock. Open System Preferences, click Sound, click Input, and then select Line In. Drag the Input volume slider to an appropriate level.
