Recording Acoustic Music With Ipad Garageband

If you’re a guitarist who’s just getting started with GarageBand and are dying to jump in a start recording, you may be overwhelmed with the different gear options available to you.

Wherever you are, iCloud makes it easy to work on a GarageBand song. You can add tracks to your GarageBand for Mac song using your iPhone or iPad when you’re on the road. Or when inspiration strikes, you can start sketching a new song idea on your iOS device, then import it to your Mac to take it even further. GarageBand is a fairly capable Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) that enables users to record and mix up to 32 tracks of audio. You can record an instrument using the iPad's built-in mic or using a recording interface and you can also record virtual instruments such as keyboards and drums provided in GarageBand. If you plan to primarily record in your home studio, I recommend using an iPad mount for mic stands such as the Talent iClaw Mic or Music Stand Holder for Apple iPad ($22). While many would argue that the only way to accurately capture an electric guitar performance is by mic’ing up your amplifier and hitting record, in my latest video I share 3 ways that you can directly input your guitar into your Mac so that you can record it in GarageBand.

Directly inputting (or ‘DI-ing’) your instrument in this way gives you more control over how your recording sounds if you choose to use Garageband’s built in amp designer and/or Audio Unit plug ins.
