Traktor Pro Echo Effect
The new Wormhole Macro Effect is similar in practice to using the freeze feature of Traktor’s delay effect but can be performed on just one knob and used in group mode in a larger effects chain. Experiment with all of Traktor’s delay effects in order to be able to drop the right one into the mix at the right time. TRAKTOR BIBLE TUTORIALS No. 3: Gater Effect. Traktor Bible Tutorial No.3 contains an in-depth explanation of the Gater effect. It shows different use scenarios (often overseen is that the Gater effect can be used to create white noise only). This guide will help you to use the internal effects in TRAKTOR PRO 2 as Send Effects from your external DJ-mixer. Especially with a 2-Deck Scratch Control setup this is a convenient way to add TRAKTOR`s effects to your external mix. Note that this configuration requires an external DJ-mixer with effect send outputs and effect return inputs. Echo fade out. I recently bought a Ddj sx2 and also djay pro to my pc. I've been playing for like 3 weeks only. Everyrhing is working fine but i can't make the echo out effect. I've seen people using echo then they turn down the volume and the echo fade out.

If you're getting weary of simply mixing two records together, it's time to delve a little deeper and do more during your sets. One way you can spice up your DJ sets is by adding external effects. Curious about how to get started? Here's a how-to guide that includes examples of analog effects that would work well for DJs and details how to set them up with your mixer.
Adding Effects
One simple way you can start to incorporate analog effects into your DJ sets is by using guitar pedals. In order to use guitar effects pedals in your mix, you will need a mixer with send and return channels, like the Pioneer DJM-900. The send and return channels allow you to route effects to the individual channels of the mixer.
No matter which effects you choose, set up your send/return channels by connecting the send outputs to the input of the effect you are using. Next, take the output of the effect and connect it to the return input on your DJ mixer. It's worth noting that many effects, especially guitar effects are in mono, not stereo. If your effects are mono, you will need to run a single 1/4” cable to your effects and a single cable back into the return input. If your effects are stereo, make sure to run two 1/4” cables into the effects units and two 1/4” cables into the return channels of the mixer.
Types of Effects
There is a whole world of effects that can be useful for mixing and used creatively to take your DJ sets further. Here's a few examples of analog pedals that would sound great paired with your tracks.
Signal Conditioners
Compression pedals create sustain without adding distortion and control dynamics. Compressors will help your drums to pop through the mix and an analog compressor would help a drum machine (e.g., the TR-8) or stems to cut through. The BOSS Compression Sustainer CS-3 pedal is a solid choice for a signal conditioner pedal; it compresses louder signals and provides smooth sustain.
Echo and Time Based Effects
Echoes and Reverbs are classic effects that will sound great on drums and percussive rhythms. You can also try applying these types of effects to a drum machine, like the Roland TR-8. Echo and time-based effects tend to work best when applied to parts of the track that are stripped down and have some space in them.
Reverb is a resonant sound that's electronically produced to create artificial acoustics and mimic the sound of large spaces like big halls and churches. BOSS's Digital Reverb, the RV-5 offers six of BOSS' best reverbs and combines them together. It's an interesting pedal for DJs as it offers spring and gate reverb and there's a modulate mode that detunes the reverb sound to add extra space.

If you're like to create tripped out breakdowns or buildups, you'll definitely need a delay pedal in your arsenal. BOSS has two great pedals for this; the Digital Delay DD-3 and the Digital Delay DD-7. While both pedals will provide high-quality sounding delay, one of the main differences is the DD-7 can be synched to the tempo of your track, while the DD-3 cannot. If you prefer the sound of crazy delay that's out of sync with your track, the DD-3 might be a good starting point. If you want a delayed sound that's more in time with your tracks, the DD-7 would be a good bet.
The Tera Echo TE-2 from BOSS is a beautiful pedal that combines delay and reverb together to produce a new stereo ambience effect. It's capable of creating sounds from washing slap backs to filtered delayed sounds. It uses BOSS' multi-dimensional processing and provides a wide range of sound adjustment with a few simple controls. This would be a great pedal to incorporate into techno or deep house sets. The BOSS TE-2 has stereo inputs and outputs for wider, wilder psychedelic effects.
Pitch Related Effects
Pitch Shifters use digital technology to generate notes other than the ones that are input into the pedal. These pedals can be set to specific intervals, like a third or a fifth and they will play a note that is the chosen interval from the note that is input. This is a very unique type of effect that could potentially add interesting harmonies and accents to parts of a DJ set. BOSS used to manufacture a pedal called the Super Shifter PS-5 that has been discontinued but may be worth hunting down. The PS-5 has been replaced by the Harmonist PS-6, which combines four pitch shifting effects in a stompbox.
Modulation Effects
Flangers are usually used to create a sweeping, jet plane type of sound. They work by delaying the sound slightly and altering the audio over time while you're playing. This makes the harmonics cancel each other out and produces the sweeping sound. When used in a DJ set, flangers can sound pretty sweet on single drum tracks, like ride cymbals. If you can find one, the BOSS BF-2 Flanger (now discontinued) is a classic flanger with four simple controls that could be used to make killer sounds during a set. The updated version of the BF-2, the BF-3, is a flanger with new 'ultra' and 'gate/pan' modes that can make swirling sounds you won't hear anywhere else.
Running Order
The order you put your effects pedals in will determine the overall sound that is produced. Pedals react to the input that is fed to them and it's best to invest some time and experiment to discover the best order for your own personal setup. Here's an example of a effects chain that could work well:
DJ Mixer Send Channel - Signal Conditioners – Pitch Related Effects – Modulation Effects – Echo and Time based Effects – DJ Mixer Return Channel
In this arrangement, each pedal will perform fairly naturally and produce the desired sound. If you have multiple pedals from each category, try swapping the order of pedals in each of the categories to see how this affects the overall sound. Placing your pedals in a different arrangement will sound completely different and may produce better sounding effects. It's best to set aside some time to really learn how your pedals can complement your tracks, stems and individual drum samples. Learning to use analog effects will give your sets a unique sound and add an extra dimension of enjoyment to your play time on the decks.

A good techno record lends itself to a few well-placed effects. Many techno cuts are sparse enough that there's room for DJs to add imaginative effects to tracks and mixes. If you're a DJ who's keen to learn more about how to use Traktor's effects in techno sets, read on..
Delays and Single FX Chains
Delay is an effect that can be creatively used in many ways during sets. There are many types of delay in Traktor, each with a unique sound that should be explored. To learn to use delay, practise using each type of delay in a Single FX unit in Traktor. To create a Single FX unit, open the Preferences, navigate to the Effects section and in the FX Panel mode select Single.
Delay
Traktor Scratch Pro 2 Echo Effect
Traktor's 'standard' delay may be a seemingly common effect in Traktor, but it's capable of producing amazing textures. Begin by loading up Delay into a single FX unit and turn the effect on by pressing the ON button. The Dry/Wet can either be at 50%, or at zero and slowly turned up clockwise. New rhythms can be created by turning the Rate (SPR level) down, then raising it back up again.
Use the EQ on the mixer or the Filter in the delay to cut the bass so only the percussion and hi hats are delayed. Close the FX by gradually turning down the D/W to 0 or pressing ON to turn the FX off. A quick ending tends to sounds best if you turn off the effect on beat with the track.
Delay T3
Start with the Delay T3 on, the D/W down to 0 and the Rate (FR.R) to about 0.25. Slowly raise up the D/W up and once it's at about 50% turn the FR.R on. Experiment with turning the Rate (FR.R) counter clockwise, then clockwise to create interesting sounds and transitions. I find Delay T3 works best with tracks that have sparsely programmed rhythms.
Delay Freeze
The Delay's Freeze parameter can be used to create transitions in a mix where other tracks can be brought in, or the track that's playing can trail out entirely. To use this effect, start with the Delay on in a single FX unit, then push Freeze (FRZ) located underneath the Feedback button. It takes a few seconds for the Delay to fade away, which gives time to mix in other tracks. This technique also works well with the other types of delay, including Ramp Delay and Tape Delay.
Ramp Delay
Ramp delay is a an effect that can produce psychedelic sounding, tripped out delay effects that sound great on techno tracks. Start out with the Dry/Wet (D/W) on the Ramp Delay turned to 50%, the Filter at about 80%, the Duration at 1/4” and the Rate all the way up at 1/32. Ramp Delay sounds best when it's applied during a part of the song with minimal percussion.
Turn on the effect then take the Rate down to 1/16, then turn the rate back up to 1/32. Once you master this, experiment with starting with the D/W control set to Dry at 0 and slowly turn it up while you sweep the Rate control. To transition back into the track, slowly turn the D/W down to 0 for a gradual fade. To turn the Ramp Delay off quickly, simply press either FX 1 or FX 2 (whichever its assigned to) to take the effect out of the mix.
FX Chains and Groups
FX can be used in Groups in Traktor, which mean more than three FX are stacked on top of each other. To create an FX chain, open the Preferences, then Effects and in the FX Panel mode, then select Group.
Beatmasher2 + LaserSlicer + Strrretch (slow)
On one FX Group, choose the BeatBeatmasher2 in the first slot, the LaserSlicer in the second slot and the + Strrretch (slow) in the third slot. This combination of FX can be used to produce trippy stretched out FX that can compliment techno sets. Try slowly turning on each FX on within the group one at a time, and adjusting its parameters to learn what each individual FX sounds like. Once you're comfortable with each effect on its own, try turning on each FX and slowly turning up the D/W so the entire chain is heard together. Adjust each parameter individually and try turning the FX within the chain on and off. Keep adjusting and experimenting and turn off the entire chain by dropping it out (with the ON button) or slowly bringing down the D/W of the chain.
BeatSlicer/ Filter:92 LFO/Delay Chain
Traktor Pro Echo Effect Download
Any FX chain that involves delay works great for techno and the BeatSlicer is a useful effect for creating rhythmic interest. In one FX Group, choose the BeatSlicer in the first slot, the Filter:92 LFO in the second slot and the Delay in the third slot. I tried placing the BeatSlicer around eight o'clock and the Filter:92 LFO and Delay around 2 o'clock. Start with the D/W of the chain at zero and slowly bring up the D/W level until the FX chain is audible. Practise adjusting the parameters of the three FX, or simply use the D/W to mix the entire chain in and out of the mix.
Beatmasher Chain
The Beatmasher can be used to create staccato snare fills, and Reverb is placed in this chain to add ambience to the sound. To create the chain, place the Beatmaster2 in the first slot, Formant Filter or Peak Filter in the second slot and the Reverb into the third FX slot in a group. In a minimal section of a track with claps or snares, bring the D/W level of the chain slowly up and adjust the level of the Beatmasher2 until it catches the snare or clap. I find it's best if the Reverb is set to a specific level when the chain is in use, as adjustments to the Reverb make a big difference in the overall sound. Use the Filter to create new rhythms and patterns and play with the snare or clap. Try adjusting the D/W level, and then re-adjust each parameter again within the chain. This is quite a fun chain to play with that can add a lot of interest to minimal tracks.
Final Words
Traktor gives DJs the power to introduce new sounds that can give sets an original flair. Take the time to carefully explore each effect and learn what its capable of! With a little practise, soon you'll start to receive compliments on tastefully placed effects in your sets.
